Introduction to SWOT: Provide a brief overview of SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) and its purpose in strategic planning.

    1. Game-like Activity: Transform the SWOT analysis into a game-like activity using tools like sticky notes and whiteboards.

    2. Team Discussions: Pair staff in teams of two or three to discuss and debate each pillar of SWOT. This approach will encourage robust discussions and diverse perspectives.

    3. Recognition: Acknowledge each team member’s contribution to foster a sense of accomplishment and encourage participation.

    4. Wrap-up Session: Conduct a wrap-up session where each team presents their findings. The collected data/information becomes the groundwork for your strategic planning process.

The results of the SWOT analysis can be utilized in the following ways:

    • Leveraging Strengths: Use your organization’s strengths to maximize opportunities. For instance, improve marketing visibility by starting a blog or a newsletter or increase networking through more in-person meetings.

    • Addressing Weaknesses: Identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to enhance and grow. For example, deficiencies in the quality of staff service delivery can be addressed through staff training.

    • Capitalizing on Opportunities: Look for areas of industry/market growth or need. For instance, an organization offering Behavioral Health (BH) services may add Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) screening during intake and partner with community agencies to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to patient-centered care.

    • Mitigating Threats: Identify potential barriers and challenges, (internal and external) and develop strategies to overcome them.

This approach makes the process enjoyable and ensures a detailed and effective SWOT analysis. It encourages team participation and leads to a more comprehensive strategic plan.

Good luck with your strategic planning process!
